The Zimbabwe Council of Churches (ZCC) joined the rest of the world in commemorating the International Day of the Girl Child, which is celebrated on the 11th of October every year. This year’s global theme is “Invest in Girls Rights: Our Leadership, Our Well-being” and the national theme “Digital generation: Our generation”. The day is set aside to raise awareness of the challenges facing girls around the world and to promote their rights. The ZCC facilitated the celebration of the International Day of the Girl Child at Nhedziwa Growth Point, Matomanzi Lodge Conference Centre in Chimanimani district. The commemorations were attended by representatives from the Ministry of Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development; Zimbabwe Republic Police; Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education; and Ministry of Youth, Arts and Culture. A total of 21 female school children from 7 local schools (Biriri, Chakohwa, Nyanyadzi, Hot springs, Mhakwe, Chikwaka and Gudyanga) attended the commemoration. During the event the ZCC encouraged all stakeholders to support the girl child in their communities. The church urged members to provide girls with opportunities for leadership and development. The commemoration has been helpful to raise awareness on the challenges faced by girls and also celebrate their achievements. The day has provided opportunity to recognize the rights of girls and to promote their empowerment and equality.
