About HSD
The Humanitarian Services and Diakonia Department is dedicated to providing comprehensive support to individuals and communities facing crises. Our work is guided by a commitment to Diakonia, the principle of active service and focuses on delivering holistic, dignified, and inclusive assistance. We are dedicated to not only meeting immediate needs but also to building long-term resilience and fostering a path to recovery for the most vulnerable.
Our efforts are structured around five interconnected 5 strategic objectives that contribute towards the overarching goal of providing holistic services that contribute towards resilience, recovery and growth among individuals and communities affected by shocks.
- To save lives and alleviate the suffering of those most in need of humanitarian assistance and protection.
- To strengthen and support climate smart agriculture and alternative livelihood interventions that increase household food, nutrition and income security.
- To facilitate safe, equitable, gender sensitive and dignified access to critical cross-sectoral basic services for the most vulnerable.
- To maximize assets of the church towards timely responses to vulnerability and building community resilience to climate induced shocks
- To coordinate and support fully and effective functioning of church schools and hospitals for improved delivery of education and health services

3528 households supported with community livelihoods and resilience initiatives including trainings on Climate Smart Agriculture, agriculture inputs distribution, ISAL trainings, livelihood diversification and market linkages in Bikita, Gutu, Mwenezi, Zvishavane, Gwanda, Chimanimani, Bililima districts.
- Approximately 20,000 individuals (8010M:11990F) reached with COVID prevention messages.
- 5 Health facilities in 6 provinces reached with PPE.
- 250 women and girls affected by COVID-19 in 5 districts (Bubi, Gwanda, Bindura, Mberengwa, Chipinge) supported.
- 1800 women and girls supported with hygiene packs and access to SRHS.
- Capacitated 900 interfaith leaders and community health care workers in Harare and Gwanda to cascade information to prevent the spread of cholera.
WASH is s an acronym that stands for (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene). It includes the acess to safe water, adequate sanitation and hygiene education. Improving access to WASH services can improve health, life expectancy, student learning, gender equality and other important issues of international development. (UNICEF)
- Rehabilitated 21 boreholes in Bulilima in 2024-2025 reaching out to 1050 household (5250 individuals)
- Establishment of a solar-powered piped water scheme in Chimanimani addressing a critical gap, improving access to water for over 2,000 individuals and enabling school and clinic operations.
- Solarised 3 boreholes in Bikita reaching out to 450 households with multiple purpose clean water.
- 20,380 individuals(6522M:13.858F) reached with monthly food hampers in 8 districts across 6 provinces (Gutu, Bikita, Chirumanzu, Mberengwa, Bindura, Chipinge, Gwanda, Bubi) between year 2019-2025
- 51 Returnees supported through various services including airport reception, temporal accommodation, immediate cash assistance, care packs, food humper, psychosocial support, access to health services to assist them in their reintegration process during year 2023-2025.
- Over 2000 IDPs in Chimanimani supported through various services including improved access to clean water, support over 236 cases of GBV, child abuse, and mental health challenges, church-led dialogue, LEFs, and drama groups, which normalized conversations around mental health and helped reduce stigma, Unconditional Food assistance, ISALs, seed and goat distribution during year 2022-2025.
- 191 (103 F: 88M) students in Mt Selinda High school reached through school social work in 2025
- 209 (107F:102m) youths in Gwanda, Bulilima and Chimanimani directly reached through Interventions for the Reduction of Risky Flight.
- 60 households (64MHH:96FHH) affected by Cyclones in Gutu, Bikita and Chipinge assisted with shelter construction material.
